The
Wizard of Oz
This week I read The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Braun. In this story
a little girl, named Dorthy, and her dog, who's name is Toto, were
caught in a tornado in their house in Kansas. They traveled into a
strange land, where her house landed and killed The Wicked Witch of
the East. Dorthy was given the silver shoes that belonged to the
Witch by the people of the town she landed. Dorthy wanted to go back
home for she missed her aunt and uncle who she lived with. The Good
Witch of the North, told her to go to the Emerald City, where the
Wizard of Oz lived. She thought that the Wizard could help Dorthy
make it back to Kansas, so she told her to follow the yellow brick
road. Before she left, she kissed Dorthy on her head to keep her
safe. Along the way she met a Scarecrow, who wanted a brain even
though he was already smart. They met a Tin Woodman who wanted a
heart to love again, even though he was already a loving creature.
The three of them met a Lion who wanted courage, even though he was
already very brave. When the friends arrived at the Emerald City,
after going through many mishaps, they asked to see Oz. The mighty
Wizard told them he would not fill their requests unless they killed
The Wicked Witch of the West. They were captured by the Witch trying
to do this, but Dorthy threw a bucket of water at the Witch after
becoming irritated with her. After going back to the Emerald City,
the adventurers found out that the Wizard was a fake. Oz gave
Dorthy's friends things that they thought would give them what they
wanted, brains, a heart and courage. Oz knew that they already had
these they just needed the confidence. He could not figure out how to
get Dorthy what she wanted though. Until he came up with the idea to
take her home in a Blimp, which was he arrived in the strange land.
When it was time to leave Dorthy missed the blimp because she was
looking for Toto. Luckily, Glinda the Good, knew how to use the shoes
that Dorthy obtained from The Wicked Witch of the East. All she had
to do was click her heels three times and Dorthy was finally home. In
my opinion, the book is better than the movie because it has many
untold adventures, although I did miss all the songs. If you enjoy
the Wizard of Oz movie, you will enjoy the book. I rate this book a 4
out of 5 stars.
